Glasgow Evidence-based Medicine Society (GEMS) is a SRC-affiliated organisation at the University of Glasgow. It was set up in summer 2009 by a group of recently qualified Glasgow medical graduates who recognised gaps in the undergraduate curriculum, particularly on skills relevant to critical appraisal and medical research. GEMS aims to promote these skills through several different mediums, including:
1. EBM Skill Workshops: Developing skills related to searching literature, critical appraisal, medical statistics, as well as various aspects of audit and research, including practical skills like making a scientific poster.
2. Journal Club: In addition to critical appraisal of a paper we will be reading, an active academician will be invited to bring further insight into the paper and the topic.
3. Pilot Mentorship Scheme: “I would love to start doing an audit, I already have some ideas, but don’t know how to getstarted!” — If that’s you, our pilot mentorship programme may be for you. Mentors provide advice and support to help you make informed decisions. This is a new programme and will be open primarily to fourth year medical students. Places are very limited. Interested students are welcome to email us for more information!
GEMS can be contacted at gems.student@googlemail.com. Feel free to e-mail with any queries you may have.
